# Labels

Adding labels to pages allows you to filter based on one or more labels. You can add a filter on the creation of a page or later in the composing process. If you wish to add or change labels when working with your content, you can do so in the metadata view in the editor panel to the right.

Note! Adding new labels and deleting old ones is done in the settings menu for the specific team.

Note! You need the right credentials for changing labels.

Note! Labels are shared across all languages of a document. On multi-language teams they are therefore edited from the default language — when viewing a translation, the Labels field is locked, just like other shared fields such as Display Name and Published Date.

## Label groups

When a team has many labels, you can organize them into **label groups** — for example a "Categories" group holding the labels that classify what a page is about, separate from labels used for workflow. A label belongs to at most one group, and grouping is optional: ungrouped labels keep working exactly as before.

Groups are managed in the same place as labels: the team's settings menu, under Labels. There you can create groups, rename them, and choose a group for each label when you create or edit it.

With groups in place, the label picker in the editor panel organizes itself: each group becomes its own submenu, with ungrouped labels listed on their own. This makes it clear which group a label belongs to as you pick it.

A few things that are safe to do:

* **Renaming a group** only changes its display name — nothing breaks anywhere.
* **Moving a label into a group** applies everywhere the label is already used, automatically.
* **Deleting a group** never deletes or removes its labels — they simply become ungrouped again, and stay on every document that has them.
