# Chapters

This page describes the nature of Local Chapters & References Chapters and how the concept of Chapters works in Strife.

What are Chapters?

Chapters can be perceived as reusable content containers for any content type (text, media, audio). Chapters are independent sections of content that hierarchically does not belong to any specific page. They are the primary building blocks of a web page and are typically used for page structuring and content disposition. Chapters inserted on a web page can be sorted in any desired order, giving the editor control of in what order content are presented on a specific web page.

A Chapter may also consume content from another Chapter. When using a Chapter within another Chapter we refer to it as "Chapters in Chapters".

> [!NOTE]
> **Example:**
>
> Chapter: Contact List
>
> Chapter in Chapter: Contact Cards (consumed within the Chapter Contact List)

If you are using Strife for product information modeling Chapters are also used for storing and managing PIM data. This goes for both PIM data that you want to present on your website and PIM data you not necessarily want to present on your website (e.g product information data for internal usage or PIM data for PDF generation).

Chapters are customized for each client based on customer requirements. How many and what kind of Chapters that is needed are defined within the project requirement definition phase and they are developed within the project implementation phase.

### Local Chapters vs References Chapters

Chapters can be page Local or configured to reference content from other documents. Chapters that reference content from other documents are referred to as "Reference Chapters". Reference Chapters are usable when there is a need to reuse specific content over multiple pages. An example of this could be contact cards, opening hours or specific call to actions (CTA's) - content that there often is a need to reuse over several web pages.

### How chapters are created

Chapters are defined in the Template builder under "Settings" (found under your account avatar). The Template builder are Workspace specific meaning you have to choose the Workspace you want to edit Chapters for.

Chapters are defined as "Content templates" in the Template builder view. In the Content template list you see an overview of your current Content templates. To review or edit an existing template click edit under the three dots next to the specific Content template. To create a new Content template (Chapter) hit "Create template".

Chapters are composed of different Fields. What Fields to use when creating a Chapter depends on the nature and purpose of the Chapter you want to create. Available Fields are presented in the list to the left when creating or editing a Chapter.

> [!WARNING]
> If you create a new Chapter you want to present content from on any web page, you have to write HTML/Markup for this Chapter. Turn to you developer for assistance.

### Add a Local Chapter to a page

Add a Chapter by navigating to a page from the Content list. Under the "Content Section", hit the "+" icon to access the Chapter Library. Pick your Chapter and provide requested content. When you're done, hit the "back arrow" at the top and then choose publish.

If you want to edit an existing Chapter on a page, simply double click on it or use the three dots you see when hovering over a Chapter in the page's Content section. From this selection you can edit, rename and remove a specific Chapter. You may also double click a Chapter to edit it's content.

If your Chapter consumes content from another Chapter (Chapters in Chapters) you can edit any consumed Chapter from the main Chapter.

> [!WARNING]
> The specific page must have a configured Chapter section in order to use Chapters on the page. This configuration is done by your website developer

> [!WARNING]
> Each page is configured to accept certain Chapters. Available Chapters in the Chapter Library may vary between pages

### Add a Reference Chapter with reusable content to a page

A Reference Chapter that reuses specific content can be created in two ways.

1. **From the Content list:** Navigate to the Content list an select "Compose". Under the "Template" tab you'll see available Reference Chapters

1. **From a page:** Navigate to the page you want to insert a Reference Chapter on. Under the "Content Section", hit the "+" icon to access the Chapter Library. Pick your Reference Chapter and then click the "+" icon to either choose from existing content to reuse or create new reusable content. If choosing existing content the Reference Chapter will auto populate with chosen content. If you choose to create new content, this content will will be made available to reference from other documents meaning it will be possible to reuse the content via a Reference Chapter on other pages.

> [!WARNING]
> Only content types that has been configured for the specific Reference Chapter are available to chose from. A scenario could be that the Reference Chapter "Contact section" has been configured to only accept "Contact cards".

When publishing a page with edited Chapters you will get information on if your changes only affects the specific page or if it also affects content that are published elsewhere on your website.

> [!NOTE]
> Click "View changes" that pops up when clicking "Publish" and select "View changes" to display what documents that are affected by your changes.

### See where a specific Reference Chapter are being used

It can be important to see where a Reference Chapter are being used, for example prior to updating its content (since content being consumed by a Reference Chapter are reusable over multiple pages).

To see where a specific Reference Chapter are being used, navigate to the Content List and choose "Filter" --> "Reference". Search for any Reference Chapter to see what pages it is being used on.

> [!WARNING]
> Search the name you have given the content within a Reference Chapter to filter it, using the Reference filter.
>
> Example: You want to find every page that uses the contact card for Niklas Andersson. Niklas Andersson's contact card is inserted on a page via a Reference Chapter called "Contact Section". Use the text "Niklas Andersson" in the Reference filter search to find every page where Niklas Contact card are being used.
