# Fields

The kinds of fields in the editor panel: text, choices, numbers and dates, lists and tables, files and links, and how boxes, required fields and shared fields work.

The fields in the editor panel come from the page's template, so your developer decides which ones you see and what they are called. This page describes the kinds of fields there are. Pictures, video, rich text and chapters have pages of their own.

### Tabs, boxes and hints

* **Tabs.** Many templates group their fields in tabs, such as **Content**, **Appearance** and **SEO**. Studio remembers the tab you used last on each page, in this browser.
* **Boxes.** Some fields sit in a box with the field's name as its heading, for example a picture, a list of documents or a group of fields. At the top of the panel the boxes start closed: click the heading to open one. Inside a tab they are always open. Studio remembers which boxes you opened, per page and in this browser.
* **Hints.** A hint box holds a note from your developer about the fields around it. Click it to read the rest.
* If a field's name is too long to fit, point at it to see the whole name.

### Text

* **Text**: one line. Click and type.
* **Paragraph**: plain text over several lines, without formatting. Line breaks are kept. Drag the lower right corner to make the box bigger.
* **Rich text**: formatted text, with headings, lists, links and pictures. See [Rich text editor](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/working-with-content/rich-text-editor.md).

### Choices

* **Checkbox** and **toggle**: click to turn it on or off.
* **Drop-down list**: click the button, which says "Choose an item" when nothing is chosen, and pick an option. Type to filter the options. If you can choose several, open the list again for each one; clicking a chosen option removes it.
* **Radio group**: a row of buttons, one per option. Click the one you want.
* **Multi select**: the chosen options are shown as tags. Click **+** to add one, and the **x** on a tag to remove it.
* **Labels**: tags from your team's labels. See [Labels](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/content-list-and-filter/labels.md).

### Numbers and dates

* **Number**: type a number, or use the arrows. The template can set a lowest and a highest value, and a number outside them stops the page from being published.
* **Slider**: drag the handle, or click the track. While you drag, a bubble shows how far along the range you are, in percent.
* **Date**, and **date and time**: type, or pick in the calendar.

### Lists and tables

* **Multi input**: a list of values, such as words or dates. Type a value and press Enter, and it becomes a tag. The **x** on a tag removes it.
* **Repeatable**: a list of rows with the same kind of field. **+** adds a row, you drag a row to move it, and the **x** removes it. The template can limit the number of rows.
* **Data table**: a table with the columns from the template. Fill in the empty last row and click **+** to add it. You change the other rows where they are, and the **x** at the end of a row removes it at once. Some tables can also be searched, sorted, or imported and exported as tab-separated text.

### Files and links

* **Picture** and **image group**: see [Working with pictures](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/working-with-content/working-with-pictures.md) and [Edit pictures](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/working-with-content/working-with-pictures/edit-pictures.md).
* **Video**: see [Working with video](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/working-with-content/working-with-video.md).
* **File**: click **Choose file** and pick a file on your computer. The kinds of files the field accepts are listed next to the button, and a file can be at most 4 MB. The **x** removes the file.
* **Assets**: a list of files from the [media library](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/media-repository.md). **+** opens the library: click the files you want, then close it. Drag a file to move it in the list, and the **x** removes it.
* **Link**: paste an address, or type at least three letters of a page's name or a document's file name, such as a PDF, and pick it in the list. Picking a page fills in the link text with its name. The button on the left switches between the address and the link text, and the button on the right makes the link open in a new tab.
* **Related**: other documents the page is related to. Click **+**, type at least three letters to search, and tick the documents. The **x** on one removes it.
* **References** and **chapters**: the documents and sections the page is built from. See [Chapters](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/getting-the-basics/chapters.md).
* **A group of fields from another template** is shown as a box. Fill in its fields as usual.

The **Title and Description** field for search engines is described in [Metadata and SEO](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/working-with-content/metadata-and-seo.md).

### Required fields

Some fields must be filled in before a page can be published. Strife saves your draft even when one of them is empty, and checks them when you click **Publish**: if a required field is empty, the page isn't published. Fill in the field and publish again. If you leave a chapter with an empty required field, Strife asks "Discard content?" (see [Chapters](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/getting-the-basics/chapters.md)).

### Fields shared by all languages

On a team with more than one language, each field is either per language or shared by all of them. Change shared fields in the default language: a change in another language changes every language. See [Languages and translation](https://strife.app/docs/user-guide/working-with-content/languages-and-translation.md).
